Waterford Green Party TD welcomes the announcement that a Technological University is to be established in the South East in the 2021/2022 academic year.
Green Party TD for Waterford, Marc Ó Cathasaigh welcomes today’s announcement that a Technological University is to be established in the South East in the 2021/2022 academic year. The joint application on behalf of the Institute of Technology Carlow and Waterford Institute of Technology (known as the TUSEI consortium) was submitted on 30 April 2021 under the Technological Universities Act 2018 and the news was announced today by Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Science and Innovation Simon Harris TD.
Welcoming the announcement, Dep. Marc Ó Cathasaigh said:
‘I am delighted to see this commitment from the Programme for Government which I helped negotiate delivered on. It’s a fulfillment of a promise I gave to voters to deliver a University of substance and scale to cater to the education needs of students across the South East. I will continue to engage with Minister Harris to ensure that this announcement is backed by the scale of capital investment required to make good on that promise, and that both the governing authority and the president of the new University of the South East attracts applicants of the highest calibre.’
‘Minister Harris repeated his commitment to expand the footprint of the Waterford campus, and his department will be meeting with the HEA and WIT to discuss the business case for acquiring the required site.’
‘This is a very good news day for Waterford and the South East, and for those students who will graduate at the end of this academic year with a university qualification. I would like to congratulate WIT President, Prof. Willie Donnelly and the entire WIT community on this exciting day as third level education in Waterford moves to the next stage”.
Minister Harris’s Department will shortly be inviting expressions of interest for the roles of chairperson and two external members of what should become the first governing body of the new TU.
