Greenway Funding
Green Party TD for Waterford, Marc Ó Cathasaigh, welcomes significant national funding to create and extend Greenways in Ireland. Two-thirds of a billion euro have been allocated to Local Authorities to advance the delivery and connection of Greenways in 2022, along with key National Road Projects.
This will see connectivity between counties and will open up a national cycle network which will provide active travel options and local amenities. These new and extended projects will bring sustainable tourism opportunities to towns and villages throughout the country. In total, €60m was allocated to around 40 Greenway projects around the country with many local authorities now working together to deliver greenways which cross county boundaries.
The Waterford Greenway extension is currently under construction with funding already in place. This week’s announcement includes the following funding streams which will benefit Waterford.
€400k to Waterford City & County Council for improvement works on the Waterford Greenway
€4million to Wexford Council for works on the Waterford to New Ross Greenway
€100,000 to Waterford City & County Council for pre-construction on the Suir Blueway for the Kilmeaden to Carrick on Suir Greenway link
€250,000 to Cork Council for the Dungarvan to Mallow Greenway
