€270,445 for Funding for Local Monuments and Historical Sites in Waterford
Green Party T.D. for Waterford, Marc Ó Cathasaigh warmly welcomes the funding announced to preserve and promote local monuments and historical sites under the Community Monuments Fund. Blackfriars Abbey and Molana Abbey will each receive €100,000 in funding with Stradbally Church receiving €50,359 and Dromana Tower House receiving €20,086
Dep. Ó Cathasaigh said “This funding is an investment in our local communities who work hard to preserve the invaluable heritage throughout Waterford. It will go towards essential conservation work, so that visitors and locals alike can connect and engage with our archaeological heritage. Communities working alongside the heritage professionals in our local authority will ensure that these special Waterford historic sites are protected for future generations.”
Minister of State for Heritage and Electoral Reform, Malcolm Noonan TD, announced the funding for 140 archaeological heritage projects throughout the country:
“This fund has supported over 330 projects since its establishment in 2020, making a tangible, positive impact to the medieval forts and churches and the historic graveyards and castles into which the lives of our ancestors are woven, along with our own, connecting us to our ancient past. “
The Community Monuments Fund scheme seeks to enable conservation of archaeological monuments in need of urgent support, encourage access to these monuments and improve their presentation, and build resilience to enable these monuments to withstand the effects of climate change.
Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien, TD, said:
“With my colleague, Minister of State Malcolm Noonan TD, we have grown this Fund yet again from last year, building year on year since its establishment. I am also delighted to see many archaeological monuments in private ownership benefitting – a recognition of the custodianship which is so important to the protection of Ireland’s archaeological heritage.”
